A very interesting article in my local paper this morning on a nun who left the convent recently and is now suing for back pay. The question is whether or not she is to be considered an employee or a servant of God. One gets paid the other does not.
Nun took a vow of poverty – but is suing for pay
While the supreme courts are taking a look at this, the article leaves me contemplating how this type of Nun Karma shows up in the lives of many going unchallenged. Volunteers who have a long standing committment to an organization and consistently go beyond the call of duty or personal resources may fall into the trap of an imbalanced exchange of energy. They give far more than they receive and suffer in silence not wanting to challenge the authorities of the organization. No one wants to look bad and we’d rather get sick as an excuse to not show up rather than announce the truth. Sometimes a seemingly generous commitment to volunteer work has been made out of guilt or we are controlled in by some way by those inviting us so that our standing in the community is upheld, others think well of us or we can remain connected to our social circle – made an outcast if we don’t volunteer.
Reviewing our need to continue in a volunteer role in an organization is a healthy thing to do. Perhaps we would like to provide our services somewhere new. However, if we can’t say no to the existing role or freely walk away we are being controlled by our non-coherent patterns - we are in a sense suffering from Nun Karma.
Where are you giving in your life more than you should due to the expectations of others? What would you change if you could? What would you do differently? Read the Nun Karma repatterning to support your reflection and make conscious choices in the present. (Link is in your newsletter)
